Bell Ringers
There has been an active band of local bellringers since 1984, who follow the unique English style of change-ringing. We ring for Sunday service, for weddings and local or national celebrations. Our practice night is every Wednesday evening from 20.00 – 21.30pm, and we welcome any visiting ringers whatever standard.
We have successfully recruited new ringers at our ringing demonstrations and ‘have a go’ sessions as part of the annual village May Day celebrations. We always welcome new members to our band. There is a very successful training programme with local residents of all ages, and members also enjoy our regular social events.
You do not need to be immensely fit and strong to ring. This is one hobby can you begin as a child and continue into your eighties! Neither do ringers have to be musical, just well co-ordinated and have a sense of rhythm.
The bell tower is 14th Century with 15th century additions. It originally contained four bells: three 17th century bells which were tolled from above ground level, and a Sanctus bell. In 1984 s new frame was fitted, with a ring of six bells comprising three new bells (Treble, Second and Third) and the re-tuned original three (Fourth, Fifth and Tenor). J.Taylor & Co Of Loughborough carried out the work including fitting with the help of Aldbury villages. The new ring of six in the ground floor ringing chamber were dedicated by John B. Taylor, Lord Bishop of St. Albans on the 17th April 1984.
